Health spending in Canada: Has spending on seniors changed?

From 2011 to 2021, the share of health expenditure spent on Canadians age 65 and older decreased slightly from 44.9% to 43.2%. At the same time, the percentage of seniors in the population grew from 14.4% to 18.5%.

By comparison, over the same time period, the share spent on Canadians age 1 to 64 grew from 52.2% to 54.2%, and this age group’s share of the population dropped from 84.5% to 80.5%.

Finally, the share spent on Canadian infants younger than age 1 stayed almost the same: 2.9% for 2011 and 2.6% for 2021. The percentage of infants in the population stayed almost the same: 1.1% in 2011 and 0.9% in 2021.
