CJRR annual report: Hip and knee replacements in Canada, 2019–2020

June 15, 2021 Hip and knee replacements continue to be 2 of the most common procedures in Canada, with more than 138,000 surgeries a year and estimated inpatient costs of over $1.4 billion annually. This includes revision surgeries (also known as repeat surgeries), which are typically more complex and require patients to stay in hospital longer than primary (first) surgeries.

Understanding the factors that influence and contribute to revision surgeries helps to support clinical best practices and improve patient outcomes.

Our annual report consists of a Snapshot, Quick Stats and revision risk curves data tables. Use them to learn about hospitalization trends and clinical information for hip and knee replacements, as well as risk factors for revision surgery in Canada.

Note: Data is sourced from the Canadian Joint Replacement Registry (CJRR) and from hospitalization and day surgery databases at CIHI.

Key findings

  • More than 63,000 hip replacements and 75,000 knee replacements were performed in Canada in 2019–2020. This represents an increase of 2.4% for hips and a decrease of 0.4% for knees compared with the previous year. The relatively stable volumes are likely due to the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, when surgeries were cancelled to provide additional hospital capacity to care for patients with COVID-19.
  • The top 3 reasons for both hip and knee revisions were infection, aseptic loosening and instability.
  • On average, hip and knee replacements had an estimated inpatient cost of approximately $10,500, while revision surgeries cost close to $16,800 (including inpatient physician costs and excluding rehabilitation).
