Description |
Breakdown of all patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) receiving renal replacement therapy (RRT) (either dialysis or living with a functioning kidney graft) by treatment modality at year-end |
Interpretation |
Counts of the number of patients by treatment modality provide an indication of both the burden of ESKD and the type of RRT. |

Rationale |
Tracking the number of ESKD patients in each of these treatment groups is important for quantifying the cost associated with dialysis and kidney transplants, as well as the need for kidney donations. Different patient outcomes and different costs are associated with each form of RRT. |
Interpretation |
Counts of the number of patients by treatment modality provide an indication of both the burden of ESKD and the type of RRT. |

Caveats and Limitations |
Data from Quebec was not included because of significant under-reporting between 2011 and 2018. Patients being treated in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut are included in the Alberta count. Patients being treated in Yukon are included in the British Columbia count. Patients being treated in Prince Edward Island are included in the Nova Scotia count. CORR is a longitudinal database, following patients over time. Reporting centres may submit changes/updates for any particular year on an ongoing basis. As a result, data is subject to change and may differ from data in previously published reports. The number of patients registered in CORR may vary from the actual number of patients receiving dialysis/living with a functioning kidney graft at year-end, for the following reasons:
For more information on under-reporting to CORR, please refer to Data Quality Documentation for Users: Canadian Organ Replacement Register, 2009 to 2018 Data (PDF). |
