Classifications and Terminologies highlights

Version 2022 ICD-10-CA/CCI classifications, Canadian Coding Standards and related products

v2022 of ICD-10-CA/CCI and the Canadian Coding Standards, and the Canadian Coding Standards for Version 2022 ICD-10-CA and CCI — Addendum: Pandemics and Epidemics (COVID-19) took effect April 1, 2022, for use with 2022–2023, 2023–2024 and 2024–2025 data. For more information, please visit our Codes and Classifications web page.

Important update: Job aid on COVID-19 rapid antigen tests (RATs)

A COVID-19 lab test is the gold standard to confirm COVID-19. In the context of the Canadian Coding Standards, a COVID-19 rapid antigen test (RAT) is not a “COVID-19 lab test.” Updates regarding RATs have been made in the following products:

Update on SNOMED CT initiatives

SNOMED CT to ICD-10-CA map refsets and opportunities for pilot testing

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) has developed a mapping reference set (refset) between a subset of SNOMED CT Canadian Edition and ICD-10-CA. This refset provides a solution for rule-based, semi-automated data collection to support reuse of data captured at the point of care by a physician and to alleviate coder burden. The maps incorporate the Canadian Coding Standards, where possible, and facilitate the collection of data for CIHI’s health indicators as well as for mandatory data elements. This subset of maps is ready for testing in an electronic health record solution. If you are interested in learning more about the subset, please email classifications@cihi.ca.

Creating a pan-Canadian primary health care value set: SNOMED CT to ICD-9

To support standardized, structured and meaningful primary care data collection across Canada, CIHI is developing a comprehensive value set that will let users capture diagnosis information and use it in electronic medical record solutions. The value set maps the most common primary care diagnoses in SNOMED CT to ICD-10-CA, the Canadian Emergency Department Diagnosis Shortlist (CED-DxS) and ICD-9. Mapping to ICD-10-CA and ICD-9 supports physician billing data collection in Canada. The list is being created based on existing provincial value sets developed by clinicians. The value set will be ready for pilot testing in fall 2022. If you are interested in learning more about the value set, please email classifications@cihi.ca

Now open: v2025 public submissions for enhancements to the classifications

The public submission period for the 2025 version of the classifications is now open. The public submission deadline for requests to enhance v2025 ICD-10-CA or CCI is March 31, 2023. Submissions received after this date will be deferred to the next version of the classification.

Education

PIC course redesign coming in July

The course on post-intervention conditions (PICs) is being redesigned, moving from a PDF to an interactive eLearning format. This course will provide you with the opportunity to put your knowledge into practice by working through cases using clinical examples. You’ll code some cases from start to finish using job aids and the most recent version of the Canadian Coding Standards as your guide. The coding standards associated with intervention-related conditions identify and explain the basic rules for classifying PICs, and this course supplements these standards by reinforcing those rules and providing further information and examples. Stay tuned — the update is coming at the end of July!

Highlights of v2022 education

v2022 ICD-10-CA/CCI, the Canadian Coding Standards and related products are available now in CIHI’s eStore. To support your transition to v2022, we’ve created a new learning bundle: Destination: v2022 Canadian Coding Standards and Classifications, available in CIHI’s Learning Centre. (It replaces the What’s New for Classifications and Terminologies web conference and Moving Forward self-learning PDF product.) Existing education products and courses have been updated with the v2022 changes; some products have also been retired. For more information about the changes, please visit the Codes and Classifications web page.
Retired education products

Bulletins — to be retired June 30, 2022

Coding questions

eQuery archiving

With the release of v2022 ICD-10-CA/CCI, there are new codes and changes to the coding standards. As a result, many of the coding directives in the older coding queries are no longer relevant. To provide our clients with better service and to ensure that the posted coding queries continue to contribute to data quality and current data collection, we are planning to archive coding questions from previous fiscal years.
If you require direction in applying the classifications or coding standards for a topic, please send your question via eQuery. Identify your specific challenge and attach a copy of the pertinent clinical documentation. We will apply the v2022 direction in our response to your question.

Archived and revised coding questions

The List of Archived and Revised Coding Questions (XLSX) was updated on April 1, 2022, to reflect archived and revised coding questions that were closed/posted between April 1, 2018, and March 31, 2022. The next release is expected in fall 2022. Please check the Codes and Classifications web page for updates.
